Nations in Neighborhoods Project Overview

nin_logo_v1

Nations in Neighborhoods is an AEMDD project in which NYC Community School Districts 25, 28, and 30 collaborate with the cultural organization, City Lore, to bring community folk and fine artists into six Queens public schools to work with students and teachers to uncover the historical and cultural contexts in which the arts are made. Teaching artists are paired with classroom teachers and arts specialists to combine oral history, community study, and artistic expertise in the classroom. Working with students, the teaching teams produce arts-integrated units of study that incorporate instruction in the traditional arts, student inquiry and primary research, as well as individual and collaborative artistic expression, in order to increase students’ arts skills, language learning, and to foster students’ awareness of the many traditions that make up the multicultural landscape of New York City.
